THE THIRD round of the Queensland Super Sprint A Series saw a smaller than expected field for the weekend with only 76 cars making the trek to Warwick. The predicted (and correct) cold weather might have deterred a few drivers. Sunday morning the cars were covered in a good layer of ice with temps around -2C. Of course it is winter in Warwick!
Saturday dawned fine, clear blue skies – however there was a cutting wind that dropped the temps somewhat, making it fairly hard for the cars to warm tyres. The “D” circuit was used over the weekend, this sees the competitors turn right just after the bridge and then turn right at point 8 over the “flip flops” back on to the main straight, each run saw the cars complete 4 flying laps.
It was battle of the V8’s for line honours, Ashley Bright in his V8 powered Holden Commodore Supercar was fastest outright for the weekend, despite only running four of the possible 8 runs, 7 second shy of Bright was John White in his Cobra with Peter Hancock third in another Cobra.
There were a couple of incidents over the weekend, the Holden Gemini of Michael Reynolds went home with a sore front after collecting the wall under the bridge. Our media team from Digital Realism got this great shot (below) of Darren Holland shooting off the track in the Flip Flops on Sunday morning, luckily Holland pulled it up before the wall with a little bit of front splitter damage.
