THE QUEENSLAND Autumn Historic Race Meeting featured a packed schedule of 35 races with over 160 entries across seven classes at Warwick’s Morgan Park Raceway on April 30-May 1.
Historic Touring Cars
DAVID NOAKES and Craig Allan emerged with the laurels in Historic Touring Cars as the popular Group N category was split into two groups with separated races for Nb with Under Two Litre Nc together for some races while the Over Two Litre Nc raced on their own.
Noakes won the first race for Nb/U2L Nc in his Ford Escort RS1600 from Allan Saunderson (Ford Cortina GT) with fastest qualifier Norm Singleton (Alfa Romeo 1750 GT) third. Their second race saw second and third spots reversed with Noakes on top again. In the all-Nb race Saunderson won from Ian Mewett (Jaguar MkII) and Peter Walsh (Morris Cooper S).
Group Nc O2L had some of the weekend’s closest racing where pole man Allan (Torana GTR XU-1) continued his good form by winning the first race,, romping away to beat Dean Neville (Chev Camaro) by 5.7 seconds with Kevin Heffernan (Holden Monaro GTS 350) third. Allan took the next races from Neville with Matt Clift (Mazda RX2) third.
The third race was for the Bill Campbell Memorial Trophy. Allan looked set to take it out, however a spin at turn 12 late in the race, relegated him to fourth with Neville taking the win from Heffernan and Clift. Allan returned to the top spot for the final event from Clift, and third went to Harry Bargwanna (Ford Mustang).

Historic Racing Cars Groups F, V, Lb and Formula Junior
KENDAL BARRY-COTTER (Group Fb PRS 82F Formula Ford) was the man to beat in three of the four races as he did not start the final race. With two second places earlier, Robert Fry took line honours in the final race in his Group Fb Elfin Aero Formula Ford) over Geoff Karger (89 Reynard Formula Ford) and Greg Bray (Group Fa Lotus 61 Formula Ford).
Historic Racing and Sports Cars Groups O, P, Q & R
CHRIS FARRELL made short work of the Racing and Sports Cars with pole in qualifying and four wins from the four races. In usual form he bought two cars along, usually a Ralt RT4 (or two), but on this occasion he sported a 1977 March 77B and a 1976 Chevron B35, the latter which he ran all weekend.
Second to Farrell in two of the races was Robert Foster (March 81A) however he slowed to finish seventh in the third race and failed to start the final event. Dean Tighe was second on that occasion Keith Carling (Sports Car Grp R). Tighe was also second in the final race with Barry Wise (84 Reynard FF2000) chasing hard.
The Warwick District Sporting Car Club’s Vice President, John Wishart’s (72 Welsor Clubman) weekend didn’t go to plan when in two races he experienced a stuck throttle, “I elected to put it on the trailer before the last race.”

Historic Production Sports Cars Groups S, T & Invited
PRODUCTION SPORTS Cars was an all Alfa Romeo affair with Andrew Wilson (Alfa Romeo 1750 GTV) fastest in qualifying and the winner of three of the four races. Manuel Pena in a similar car, scored three second places before winning the last from Wilson. Third spots went to Don Bartley (Austin Healey Sprite), James Anderson (Alfa Romeo GTV 2000) and Trevor Bassett also in an Alfa.
Historic Sports Sedans Group U & Invited (including Trans Am)
IN THE combined categories, Garry Ford (V8-powered Ford Escort) qualifying fastest and won all four races. Mark Trenoweth wrestled his crowd favourite Group U Jaguar XJS second place each time and Adam Duce (72 Leyland Clubman GT) had a brilliant weekend with four third places. The third race featured the Fred Sayers trophy, being the first Group U car home and Trenoweth took out the award which is also awarded to the second placed Duce as well.
