Round 3 A sprints

Saturday the 2nd of June saw a frost and the beginning the Warwick District Sporting Car Club’s Super Sprints round 3 of the A series. The Sprints where conducted on the 2.1 km E Circuit. This circuit utilises the well-known Siberia and Gum Tree corners. 7 runs were completed with each run consisting of 4 laps.

The fastest on the weekend was Vikki Paxton who put done a n overall run time of 4:01.284. On her flying laps, Vikki managed to crack into the sub 1 minute time with a blistering 59.735 seconds.

Once again there was a great turn out of different cars including a large number of Cobras and Zed cars putting on a show. The juniors were also back and all appeared to be improving and showing more confidence with each run completed. The fastest of the juniors was Chloe De Lissa with an overall run time of 5:23.981.

The weekend ran well with only a few minor incidents and a few drivers having to retire due to mechanical break downs. During Friday’s practice, Terry Johns‘s car decided to supply the BBQ while Matt Allsopp supplied the oil. Fortunately for both, the damage was fairly minor.

Wild and Windy for Round 2 B Sprint series

Saturday 12th of May saw the beginning the Warwick District Sporting Car Club’s Super Sprints round 2 of the B series. A cold wind blew on the Saturday bringing out jumpers and beanies and giving a taste of some winter weather. The cooler conditions also lowered the temperature of the track catching a few competitors out causing a few spins and some not so ideal racing lines. The Sprints where conducted on the 1.5 km D Circuit. The D circuit is a challenging track where the competitors turn right after passing under the bridge and are kept busy through the flip flops before turning back on to the straight.

Once again the juniors were back and having a good go. Both girls, Alexandra Redhead and Alyssa Lepp, who shared the drive in a Suzuki, improved with each run and lowered their Personal best lap times.  Also amongst the Juniors was Tom Brelsford diving his Mk 1 Escort. Tom was in the same group as his father and the pair took turns at chasing and being chased while trying to outdo each other.

The Mothers were not forgotten for Mother’s day on Sunday with a lovely morning tea held on in the Café area.

Overall there were very little incidents with 7 runs completed throughout the day with each run consisting of 4 laps.

The C series will run their second round on the 26th and 27th May. This will conclude the second rounds for all A,B and C  Sprint series with round 3 of the A series starting on the 2nd June.

April 2018

The second round of the WDSCC  Super Sprints A series, was held over the weekend of 7th & 8th April at Morgan Park Raceway. The fantastic Warwick weather allowed for the competitors to put down some great lap times. Being the second round for the year, there was no shortage of competition.

There was also a good fields of Cobras as well as Zed cars who always put on a good show.

Amongst the competitors on the weekend was Madisson Crowe who celebrated her 18th Birthday while chasing her father, Michael Crowe, lap times in their BMW. During the Trophy presentation, Madison was presented with a Birthday cake for all to enjoy.

C series Super Sprints successful round 1 with equal Championship points!

March 2018

On the 3rd and 4th of March, the Warwick District Sporting Car Club hosted the first round of the C series Super Sprints.

The C series saw a diverse range of vehicles competing over the weekend on the 3km “K” circuit. The vehicles ranged from a 1935 Indy car to sports cars, daily drivers driven to the track to dedicated racing cars, modern all wheel drives to good old Aussie Muscle cars. With something to please all types of interest, the spectators were not left disappointed.

There were many new faces competing in the C series. Some, while new to Morgan Park, are by no means new to the sport of motor racing with many drivers in the past competing at hill climbs, sprints and rallies. There were also other drivers, including juniors, competing for their first time in sprint events. All had a great time and are looking forward to the next round.

Even though a threatening storm rolled on over on the Saturday afternoon, the track was dry and all seven runs for the weekend were completed with only a few minor incidents. Many competitors had also lowered their personal best lap times.

Current first place for the “C” series championship points stands at a tie with Brad Stehr and Nic Andrews both holding 42 points with Beau Hatton at 39 points.

Each of the A,B and C Super Sprint Series have now completed the first round. While champion points for each series are currently close, there are 3 more rounds per series left which should make for some great competition.

The next of the Sprint Series is the “A” series round 2 and will be on the 7th & 8th April. For more information and for what events are coming up, visit www.morganparkraceway.com.au

Dry weather for B series Round 1

Saturday 24th of February was the start of the first round of the Warwick District Sporti ng Car Club’s B series Super Sprints Run on the 3 km “K” circuit.

After a wet day during Friday’s practice the weather was not looking ideal for the weekend. To everyone’s delight the rain held back and 7 runs were completed for the weekend. Unfortunately a few competitors out of the 105 entered over the weekend had to retire with various mechanical issues.

Warwick District Sporting Car Club like to encourage juniors and welcome them into the sport. There were three juniors competing on the weekend, Tom Brelsford , Alexandra Redhead, and Alyssa Lepp.  While Tom has competed in last years Super Sprint Series, it was the very first time for Alexandra and Alyssa who both shared a Susuki Swift for the weekend. Both girls drove very well and are surely now hooked on the sport.

To prove that age is no barrier, Tim Deacon aged 80ish , competed over the weekend and completed all seven runs and thoroughly enjoyed the event.

The B series also saw a large number of Lotus drivers , all duelling it out for top position. Lotus Driver Geoff Noble came out on top as well as leading the B series Championship. Following Geoff in second place in the Championship points is Jason Wishart, then Nick Ashwin.

The next Super sprint round will be round 1 of the “C” series on the 3rd and 4th of March. Spectator entries are free and all are welcome to watch. The Pit Exit Café will also be providing great food and lovely coffee.

Super Sprints A series Round 1

The 2018 Qld Super sprint series had a wet start on the first weekend in Feb. 80 Competitors from all over Qld and Northern NSW attended the first Round of the A Series at Morgan Park Raceway in Warwick Qld running on the large 3 km “K” circuit. Most braved the conditions with some coming a little unstuck and finding the edges of the track are not the ideal racing line. Due to the wet weather, times were slow and only 4 runs were achieved on the sat.

Sunday came and so did the sun, giving the track surface some better temperature and adhesion. The warmer dry weather meant more of the larger horse powered vehicles decided to try and put down some good lap times and possibly score some championship points. 3 runs were achieved in better conditions giving 7 runs for the weekend…Vikki Paxton with her Dallara took 1st place, 2nd was Peter Hancock in his Cobra and coming in 3rd was Phil Sutcliffe in his Skyline GTR. Only 13 points separate the top, 10 so the season is off to a great start.

Amongst the competitors for the weekend were two Warwick local juniors, Tom Clift and Adam Baguley, both aged 15. While this is Tom’s second year for the super sprints, Adam is just starting. Both boys ran well and had an enjoyable weekend.

The next Super sprint round will be round 1 of the “B” series on the 24th and 25th of February. Spectator entries are free and all are welcome to watch.

2016 Super Sprints A Series Round 3

THE THIRD round of the Queensland Super Sprint A Series saw a smaller than expected field for the weekend with only 76 cars making the trek to Warwick.  The predicted (and correct) cold weather might have deterred a few drivers.  Sunday morning the cars were covered in a good layer of ice with temps around -2C.  Of course it is winter in Warwick!

Saturday dawned fine, clear blue skies – however there was a cutting wind that dropped the temps somewhat, making it fairly hard for the cars to warm tyres.  The “D” circuit was used over the weekend, this sees the competitors turn right just after the bridge and then turn right at point 8 over the “flip flops” back on to the main straight, each run saw the cars complete 4 flying laps.

It was battle of the V8’s for line honours, Ashley Bright in his V8 powered Holden Commodore Supercar was fastest outright for the weekend, despite only running four of the possible 8 runs, 7 second shy of Bright was John White in his Cobra with Peter Hancock third in another Cobra.

There were a couple of incidents over the weekend, the Holden Gemini of Michael Reynolds went home with a sore front after collecting the wall under the bridge.  Our media team from Digital Realism got this great shot (below) of Darren Holland shooting off the track in the Flip Flops on Sunday morning, luckily Holland pulled it up before the wall with a little bit of front splitter damage.

SSB1 Super Sprints Round 1

Round One of the B Series Queensland Super Sprints saw almost 140 cars entered, although we lost a couple with mechanical issues during Fridays Practice.

The first round was raced over the 3.0km circuit for 3 laps.

Saturday dawned fine and we look set to get the maximum number of runs in for the day until around 3pm when the heavens opened and we received 40mm in around 40 minutes at the track.  Whereas in town they got little or none.

There was so much rain that the racing was called off when we had streams flowing over the track and through the pits!  A lovely sunrise on Sunday morning greeted the competitors, the rain stayed away but Saturdays water made it fairly humid for the day.  The top three cars were fighting it out for the top spot which eventually went to Geoff Noble in his Lotus Elise, chasing hard and quickest in a couple of runs was Vikki Paxton in her modified F3 with Luke Brown third for the weekend driving his Condor Mk.1 racing car.

Here are the top 10 Results:
